Piano Lessons with Amy Simpkin
Flexible piano lessons for all ages and stages, to suit your individual interests.
As a young and enthusiastic freelance musician, I am very excited about music-making as a composer and pianist. I have 9 years' teaching experience, ABRSM Grade 8 and a diploma (ARSM), as well as a dipABRSM in piano teaching. I have a valid PVG and relevant safeguarding training.
Lessons are always based on the pupils' interests, and choice of repertoire, method books and potential exam syllabuses will always reflect this. I’m also happy to bring in elements of keyboard, composition, music theory and songwriting to lessons, and encourage pupils to be creative in their playing. Lessons are well structured, and depending on the age and stage of the pupil will involve warm-ups, focused work on pieces, creative time and musical games. I encourage regular practise at home, with oversight from parents for younger pupils.
Overall, music lessons should be fun and enjoyable, and it’s important this remains our motivation for learning. I can’t wait to share my love of music with you!

I really believe the studio space at Queen's Park School of Music is an excellent environment for learning music. I would encourage pupils to come along to the studio to play on a good quality piano and enjoy the supportive and buzzing atmosphere filled with other like-minded musicians. However, if travelling to Shawlands is stopping you getting in touch about lessons, please still reach out, I'd love to hear from you and see if I can help in any other way.

Whilst I am able to offer occasional zoom lessons, I would strongly encourage pupils to attend in-person. Being with the teacher and instrument in the room is un-paralleled, and far better for learning and understanding technique and artistry of playing, as well as the sound quality being infinitely better in person!

I always encourage pupils to come and try lessons for 3 weeks, to see how they get on with the instrument and with myself as a teacher. If after that time you decide it's not for you, don't worry! Piano isn't for everyone, and sometimes a different instrument or another teacher might be a better fit.

There are several wonderful pianists and teachers in Glasgow, but I believe there are some unique aspects of my teaching that will set apart pupils' experience. Whilst being fully qualified with an ABRSM diploma in piano teaching and ARSM piano, I also have experience working in schools that has built my communication and teaching skills. I have experience of preparing pupils for exams from several different exam boards including ABRSM and Rockschool, as well as SQA music exams. As a composer, I'm always encouraging pupils to be creative, writing their own songs and pieces, and I have the software to facilitate recording and producing music during lessons. I'm a 'people' person, and all about building good relationships with pupils (and parents), understanding each individual and their learning styles, to provide a unique, well-researched method of teaching, individual to the pupil.
